ABOUT US

Social understanding and the ability to “walk in the shoes” of another person are capabilities that elude many people on the autism spectrum. And what is acting? It is about relating to fellow actors onstage. It is about interpreting a script and reacting to a situation. It is about reading body language and understanding vocal cues, and it is about interpreting and portraying emotions. These are the very skills we all use in our everyday lives as we interact with the world around us. And these are the skills that those on the autistic spectrum find so challenging. Shenanigans, through high-energy games, skits, and improvisational situations, encourages those affected by high-functioning autism and Asperger's to develop and practice these essential social skills in a supportive environment.

Shenanigans, founded by Sandy Bruce, was an idea inspired by her teenage grandson with Asperger's who found traditional youth theater was not a good fit with his abilities. Taking a vision, finding a wonderful and enthusiastic improv director (Jstar of The Basement Theatre), we launched this pioneering concept with a successful two-week series of summer camps in 2009. Shenanigans has grown to a team of instructors conducting ongoing weekly classes for children through adults, frequent workshops, and an exciting series of summer camps integrating visual and performing arts through theater. As the program continues to expand and serve those affected by autism, we will broaden our scope to include community-facing performances for greater public awareness and acceptance of the unique contributions and talents of this very special population.
